Ex-Army man Ajay Kothiyal to be AAP’s CM candidate in Uttarakhand

Mr Kothiyal's selection as the party's CM face is based on public feedback, said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Delhi Chief Minister and  AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday that the retired Army colonel Ajay Kothiyal will be the party’s chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming Uttarakhand assembly elections in 2022.

Ajay Kothiyal was the principal of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi at the time of the Kedarnath accident and is credited with doing remarkable work in rescuing people and assisting those impacted get their life back on track in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Mr Kejriwal, speaking at a press conference, said the decision to name Mr Kothiyal, who joined the AAP in April, as the party’s CM face was based on feedback from people who are tired of politicians running the state.

“Aam Aadmi Party today declared Colonel Ajay Kotiyal as its CM candidate in Uttarakhand. Who will be the next CM of Uttarakhand? a patriotic soldier Or A corrupt leader?,” tweeted Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

“Colonel Retd. Ajay Kothiyal will be the AAP Chief Ministerial candidate of Uttarakhand. AAP will develop the state as a spiritual capital for Indians staying across the world. It will also employ youth,” said Kejriwal in Uttarakhand today, as quoted by ANI.

Ajay Kothiyal also expressed his gratitude to Mr Kejriwal for placing his trust in him and promised to do his best to meet his expectations. He requested that people give him only six months to prove his worth.

Mr Kejriwal later met with AAP office-bearers and staged a roadshow from the town’s Clock Tower to Dilaram Bazar. The AAP is the first political party to select their candidate for the Uttarakhand Assembly elections.
