All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) director Randeep Guleria informed on Saturday, 24th July that the trial results for Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin on children are likely to be released by September.
Randeep Guleria said “Vaccines for children should come out now because trials in India are already underway for vaccines which are available in India. Bharat Biotech’s trial is in the final phase and by September we will have the data,” as quoted by ANI.
He also asserted that vaccines should be available for children in September and once the vaccines are available, we can start schools for children in a phased manner. He said, “we will give more protection to kids and more confidence to the public that children are safe.”
Trials are conducted by dividing students into three categories. The first trial was started in the age group of 12 to 18, 2nd category was of the age group of 6 to 12. Trials for children between the ages of and 2-6 years are currently undergoing trials.
He also mentioned that vaccine manufacturer Zydus Cadila – the Ahmedabad-based pharmaceutical firm has also included the data for children for their vaccine.
He also mentioned the possible reasons for the delay in procuring vaccines for children. “There could be multiple reasons of delay. I think two or three things need to be kept in mind – One is collaboration and the understanding with the government on the doses. They should have enough doses to give because we must understand that these companies have pre-booked the order from many countries.”
